Frequently Asked Questions
How does training work? We will do an initial 15-minute phone call to determine what exactly you hope to accomplish with training. If you decide to work with us, we will send you a questionnaire to complete. From there, we will determine a training plan. When we meet, we will work with you and your dog. We will demonstrate how to train your dog to do a particular behavior and then observe you practicing with the dog. Between session you will need to spend time practicing the behaviors that were taught that week.
Where do you do the training? We have a few options. We can come to you and train in your home. We can do video training online. If you live on the southside of Atlanta, we are now offering Basic Obedience group classes.
How long is each session? Each training session is between 45-minutes to 1-hour and is held once per week.
How old does a puppy need to be to start training? You can begin training your puppy generally between 6 and 8 weeks old. Or as soon as you get him/her home. Start with potty training and crate or kennel training. From there, we can typically start teaching behaviors such as sit, down, stay, come, and others at about 12 weeks old. The earlier you start, the better.
Is it okay to play tug of war? The short answer is yes. Tug of War is a great energy burner. It does not make your dog a predator. He already is one. It can also help you understand what kind of control you have over your dog.
Do you use e-collars in your training? No, we use only Science-based Positive reinforcement training. We do not use E-collars, prong collars, or choke collars in our training.
How do I get my puppy to stop biting? Puppy biting is normal. It is how they learn. Unlike us, they do not have hands. They learn by using their mouths. They are always putting things in their mouths. We need to learn how to manage the biting. We accomplish this in our training classes.
Are Dog training classes worth it? Think about this. How much does it cost to replace a soiled torn up carpet or having to give up your dog because of their constant barking? Indeed, much more than the cost of dog training. We charge $100 per hour for in-home training with a 10% discount for packages. If you follow the trainer’s instructions and practice with your dog, then yes, dog training classes are worth it.
Can dog training help with aggression? Obedience training does not correct aggression. I strongly suggest you work with an experienced trainer or behaviorist to help with aggression to determine what is causing the aggression. They can evaluate the situation and come up with a plan.
What are the seven basic dog commands? These would be Sit, Down, Come, Stay, Leave it, Off, Loose Leash walking.
What commands should my dog know? See above answer
Is it ever too late to start training and dog? No, you can teach old dogs new tricks. But starting as early as possible is the best prevention for behavior issues.
What is the best dog training method? Science-based positive reinforcement training is the recommended training method. To be a Premium Professional or Professional member, you must be LIMA-compliant and use the Least Intrusive and Minimal Aversive training method.
Does rubbing your dog’s nose in Pee work? The only thing rubbing your dog’s nose in the Pee does is scare your dog and hurt your relationship. If you catch your dog peeing in the house, make a disruptive sound, and immediately take them to their designated area to go potty. If you don’t notice them, clean up using an enzyme cleaner and mark it off as a dog owner mistake.
Why does my puppy Pee in the house after being outside? It may be that your puppy did not finish peeing. Sometimes they will need to go multiple times when outside. Be patient. It may also be that the spot inside the house where they are peeing was not cleaned with an enzyme cleaner that neutralizes the smell.
Can a 10-week-old puppy sleep through the night? Yes, if their crate area does not allow them any more room than to turn around and lay down. They will not pee or poop in the same spot they sleep. If you bought a wire crate, you should have gotten a divider that you can use to make the crate smaller.
Where should your puppy sleep the first night? I advise that your puppy sleep in a crate that only allows them to turn around and lay down. You can put the crate next to your bed the first night. But prepared for some whining and crying. Crying is to be expected. But do not give in. They will learn to be quiet once they are used to it.
